SLIDESHOW: CAPE takes off

CORNWALL, Ontario – There was something for everyone at the third annual Cornwall and Area Pop Event (CAPE) this weekend.

The event is known for being one of the more family friendly conventions in the area, and drew in its fair share of young fans.

Returning exhibitor, Dave Martin of Kah-Boom Komics says that seeing families come out is one of his favourite parts of taking part in smaller conventions.

“There are more families, because it’s more obtainable for the price point,” said Martin. “We do shows that are more attuned to that sort of thing, and we try to have product for that.”

Featuring celebrity guests, Sean Gunn, Yanic Truesdale, Michael Copon, Michael Koske, and Christian Potenza, to name a few, the weekend was chock-full of people and things to see. Another cool stop on the endless list of photo opportunities was the Jeep from Jurassic Park.

New to this year’s event was the first-ever cosplay contest, as well as a beer produced for sample at the event by Rurban Brewing.

Organizer, Randy Sauve says that he’s floored by the community support he’s received to date.

“It was overwhelming – I think just the sheer amount of families coming out is wonderful,” said Sauve. “And it’s something we try and promote year after year.”

Sauve says that celebrity guests really appreciated having their younger fans out to enjoy the event – something they don’t often see at larger conventions.

“There’s also a lot more cosplay,” said Sauve. “It’s grown by leaps and bounds this year.”

Chris Leger, also known as The Vintage Toy Man, says that for a long time, the name of the game was collecting.

“I used to attend all kinds of these conventions, and have obviously amassed a good collection,” said Leger. “My house looks like Comic-Con all the time.”

In terms of plans for next year’s event, Sauve says that the planning never really stops.

“When it’s all over, we take a day off,” said Sauve. “Then it’s back to work as usual.”
