MAXVILLE, Ontario – The 70th Glengarry Highland games opened to rain on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, but it did not dampen the strong Celtic spirit in the crowd.

No events were delayed and the rain soon dissipated.

During the opening ceremony, MC Reg Gamble took time to remember Connie Blaney, a skilled piper and a strong supporter and former president of the Glengarry Highland Games who passed away this past January.

They also greeted Bill Livingstone, the 2017 guest of honour at the Highland Games.

Livingstone is a renowned piper and lawyer based in Whitby Ontario. Livingstone is the only person to have led a Grade One band to the World Championship and to have won a Clasp for piobairachd at the Northern Meeting in Inverness, Scotland. Both are significant piping distinctions.

Also at the opening ceremonies were all living past presidents of the Glengarry Highland Games and Gamble took a moment to ensure that they were recognized and thanked them for their efforts as without them, the Games would not have become what it is today in its 70th year.
