CORNWALL, Ontario – Firefighters from South Stormont Township’s Station #1 arrived on the scene of a small rubbish fire on a residential property on Monday afternoon.
The firefighters were on the scene shortly after 2 p.m. and had the fire under control in about 30 minutes.
“This was not a major fire, but it could have been,” said Acting South Stormont Fire Chief Paul McAlear. “Conditions are changing extremely fast. Nothing has had the chance to green up yet. Today was an incredible day for drying with our first real day of heat and the 50 km/h winds we had.”
The fire occurred at a residents on Avonmore Rd. near Post Rd.
McAlear wanted to remind residents that permits are required for anything beyond a small fire.
He said that while no burn ban was in place, residents should be mindful of the weather conditions when starting a fire.
“We want to put the message out there to avoid fires in dry and windy conditions,” said. McAlear.
