CORNWALL, Ontario – Shoppers who need a retail fix have a date to circle on their calendars – a new development that includes the Wal-Mart Supercentre in Cornwall will open Jan. 29.

City hall, in a release regarding changes to bus routes in that area, confirmed the opening date for the development.

Wal-Mart Canada spokesperson Alex Roberton confirmed the store will open that day too.

The Wal-Mart Supercentre has been under construction for more than a year on what was once industrial land owned in part by Domtar Papers.

It replaces the existing Wal-Mart, located in the Brookdale Centre, which quickly outgrew its surroundings.

The new development, known officially as SmartCentres, also includes a dollar store.

Cornwall Transit is enhancing some of its routes to service the new retail area, which sits at the corner of Ninth and Cumberland streets.

As of Monday, Jan. 26, the Cumberland (#2) and Brookdale (#3) bus routes as well as the Community Service route #61 will begin stopping at the SmartCentres development.

For passenger convenience, a new bus shelter has been erected and placed near the southwest corner of the property.

Changes will include:

• The Cumberland route (#2) will offer service directly from Pitt and Second Streets. It will enter from Seventh Street, continuing through the SmartCentres and east on Ninth Street before proceeding north on Cumberland Street.

• The Brookdale route (#3) will enter SmartCentres from Ninth Street before continuing on to the main bus terminal at Pitt and Second Streets.

• Community Service route #61will provide front-door service within the SmartCentres development.

The other Cornwall Transit routes will remain the same and buses will continue to serve the Brookdale Centre.

“These enhancements will ensure that Cornwall Transit passengers have full access to the SmartCentres development,” said Len Tapp, transit manager. “We expect this to be a popular stop for both regular passengers and new users of our service.”
