CORNWALL, Ontario – Bernadette Clement has no regrets following her second bid to become local MP that has come up short.
The veteran Cornwall city councillor conceded the election result Monday night, where she lost to incumbent Tory Guy Lauzon, was not what we wanted, but added the country has gained more with the election of a majority Liberal government led by Justin Trudeau.
“(It was) a difficult night for me,” she said. “But I feel so happy that we have a great new prime minister.
“His leadership will be dynamic and accessible and will better reflect who we are as Canadians.”
Clement made some inroads following a 2011 campaign that saw her decimated by Lauzon by more than 21,000 votes. This time around her campaign could not take advantage of a groundswell of support for the Liberal across the country.
“I also feel so proud of the local campaign team…so vibrant and dedicated,” she said. “I extend congratulations to MP Guy Lauzon and best wishes to his wife Frances.
“I have no doubt that he will continue to work hard for this riding.”
Clement said she has returned to work at the SD and G Legal Clinic and is looking forward to her first city council meeting next week in nearly two months.
