CORNWALL, Ontario – Code Heroes is a new innovation driven organization started by Cornwall’s own Kelly Bergeron. Code Heroes is dedicated to promote innovation in Cornwall and provide citizens with the skills they will need in the economy of the future.
This Saturday, Nov. 12 they are bringing National Girls Learning Code Day to Cornwall.
On Saturday, 650+ girls ages 8-13 and their parent or guardian will attend simultaneous in-person workshops in 26 cities across Canada with women able to attend from across the globe through online resources.
Code Heroes’ Headquarters at 44 Pitt Street will be where the women of Cornwall can go to learn how to build a video game, which is the objective of this year’s Girls Learning Code Day.
Participants will be introduced to Scratch, a beginner level programming tool which encourages the development of math skills, computational skills and imagination.
At the end of the seminar, the girls will have an opportunity to demonstrate what they’ve learned and even upload their video game to the web for their friends and family to play.
“The issue of digital literacy has never been more pressing,” a statement from event organizers Ladies Learning Code reads. “As conversations about the impending skilled labour shortage and the need to include coding in the curriculum make national headlines, events like National Girls Learning Code day are more relevant than ever. This event we will help girls discover a passion for learning about technology, experience the satisfaction that comes from being a builder of the web and become more confident and develop a willingness to try new things.”
