Cornwall Community Police Officer charged

CORNWALL, Ontario – A Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) officer was arrested and charged on Tuesday August 2, 2016, following an investigation by the Brockville Police Service.

Constable Daniel Merpaw has been charged with obstructing a peace officer contrary to the Criminal Code. He was released to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville, on September 2, 2016. The officer has been reassigned to administrative duties.

The Brockville police investigation into Constrable Merpaw dates back to an off-duty incident that occurred in May 2016.

According to Brockville Police Detective Sergeant Tom Fournier, the Brockville Police were in communication with CCPS throughout the investigation and agreed to lay charges on Tuesday.

Sergeat Fournier stated that in addition to criminal charges, Merpaw could still face discipline from the police board.

Fournier went on to say that he could not comment further on the matter as the charges against Merpaw are related to another criminal case before the courts.
