Cornwall man caught in $1.6M fraud case in Montreal
Police made the arrest Saturday morning.

CORNWALL, Ontario – A Cornwall man has been caught up in a $1.6-million fraud scheme in Montreal.

Québec police arrested four individuals as part of an alleged tax fraud scheme involving job-placement agencies.

Police allege the operation included sending people to work at fast-food restaurants from 2013 to 2015. The fake job placement agencies were paid by cheque from the restaurants but the individuals were compensated off the books by the agency so that they could receive employment insurance.

The four people made as much as $1.6 million.

Muhammad Sohail Gill, 43, of Cornwall was among those charged.

The Montreal Gazette reported Gill described himself as a supervisor for a company when he appeared in court. The newspaper further reported he was required to post a $4,000 bond on top of a deposit in order to be released, must not possess any bank documents unless they pertain to him and he is not allowed to work as an accountant while his case is pending.

The case returns to a Quebec court in June.
