CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall police are investigating a fire on Lauber Avenue.

Platoon Chief Steve O’Reilly says firefighters were called to the triplex, east of Cumberland Street, around 6 p.m. on Wednesday (Dec. 30).

Eleven firefighters and four trucks arrived at the scene and quickly extinguished the flames.

The small blaze ignited in the bathroom of the unit in the back of the building, which was empty at the time, causing substantial smoke damage. The two front units were untouched.

No one was injured.

O’Reilly described the fire as “suspicious.”

Cornwall firefighters turned over the investigation to police at 7 p.m.

Cornwall Community Police Service Sgt. Trevor Butler told Seaway News “the scene will be held and the investigation will continue tomorrow to determine if it’s arson or not.”
