SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – With an eye on the future development of the Cornwall Regional Airport a check for $20, 000 was presented to the Township of South Glengarry on Friday Oct. 28.

The Cornwall and Counties Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) held a press conference at the Cornwall Regional Airport where they made the announcement.

The support received will be put towards a business plan. During the press conference Guy Lauzon, MP Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry, expressed enthusiasm for the project. He said he was excited to see the plan on how the airport would be expanded.

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy said, “This (business plan) was an initiated by the City of Cornwall and Township of South Glengarry to help guide the commission on how to move forward, upon approval provided by the respective City and Township.”

South Glengarry Mayor, Ian McLeod, explained why a business plan for the airport was needed when he said, “Before we make any changes, we wanted a third party review.” He also said, “Sometimes when you look at something for a long time, you don’t see all the opportunities.”

There is a draft of the business plan, but O’Shaughnessy said, “It is still in raw format. It needs to be reviewed by the administration.”

Lesley Lang, Executive Director for the Cornwall & the Counties Community Futures Development Corporation, explained how the plan for expansion of the Cornwall Regional Airport, which was established in 1984, would benefit the area by promoting both small and medium sized businesses.

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy summed up the sentiments of expanding the Cornwall Regional Airport when he said, “Growth brings growth.”
