CORNWALL, Ontario – Glengarry’s answer to ‘What is the best darn light show in the county?’ gets answered this weekend.
The ninth annual Festival of Lights kicks off Saturday in Island Park.
The event, sponsored by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, includes more than 200,000 lights as well as displays created by local schools, agencies and service clubs, said volunteer Bonnie McDonald.
“There’s also hundreds and hundreds of volunteer hours put into this,” she said.
The free event runs from this weekend to Dec. 31, where things will be capped off with a grand fireworks display to help ring in the New Year.
The grand opening Saturday will feature Glengarry Youth Musical Theatre Company (GYMTC), performing at 5:45 p.m. Country singer Andy Urbain takes the stage at 6 p.m. with a special appearance of “Catfish Ben” from Wild 96.5 FM followed by the invited dignitaries and the official “Lighting up of Island Park” at 7 p.m.
Free hot chocolate is also served at the festival.
