CORNWALL, Ontario – A brother and sister team at St. Lawrence Secondary School have been working to raise money for the research of childhood cancer.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and Haleema and Osama Chaudhry have been raising money at their school by selling gold coloured flags, gold is the colour of Childhood Cancer Awareness month.
The students had been selling the flags to their peers at $1 a flag for the past three weeks. As of Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018 they had raised $610 and sold 400 flags. In addition to selling the flags, they also held a “Guess the Number of Candies” fundraiser where people could buy a ticket to guess the number of candies in a jar.
“There are kids suffering from childhood cancer and we wanted to raise awareness,” said Haleema. “We have been working with the Canadian Cancer Society for several months and we wanted to help the children who are suffering.”
“We’ve basically been working on making flags every night,” said Osama. “It was a lot of hard work, but it was about raising awareness.”
On Thursday, Haleema and Osama and their peers at St. Lawrence Secondary School planted their golden flags on the front lawn of their school.
They had help from Sophie O’Brien, a 3-year-old girl who suffers from bi-lateral Retinoblastoma which has left her blind and with a prosthetic in one eye.
