Former restaurateur, famous in Cornwall and Massena, passes away

CORNWALL, Ontario – A man who helped build the restaurant business on both sides of the international border has passed away.

Edgar ‘Eddy’ Leo Hebert, owner/operator of Hebert’s Steak Ranch in Massena and the original proprietor of Coco’s Steak House in Cornwall died early Monday morning.

He was 80.

Hebert enjoyed an exciting life. He was born and raised in Cornwall and following his formal education he made the move to California before returning to the Seaway City where he managed the Cornwallis Hotel. He became a professional boxer at one point and was also at one time a co-owner of the Cornwall Royals.

Hebert also enjoyed time at billiards, and captured a number of trophies and tournaments over the years.

He and his brother built the well-known Hebert’s Steak Ranch in Massena, which quickly became a favourite among carnivores on both side of the border.

Hebert met his adoring wife Betty when she managed and sang at his Cornwall restaurant. He is survived by Betty (Compeau), daughter Jo-Ann and husband, Todd Mullin of Massena, Cameron Hebert of Montreal, Greg Hebert and his companion Kiri of Toronto, a step-daughter and husband Erin and John Langabeer of Cornwall, grandchildren Dalton and Dylan Mullin of Massena. Hebert also leaves behind his close brother Lawrence of Cornwall, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services for Edgar will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena with Rev. Rob Schrimer officiating.
