CORNWALL, Ontario – I grew up with country music. My mother was a beautiful singer and had country music playing in the house from sun up to sun down… George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette, Willie Nelson… Their music certainly influenced my music.
Another one of the greats, Waylon Jennings, added a number of his songs to the soundtrack of my life, including Lukenbach, Texas, Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys, Good Hearted Woman, and of course, the theme to The Dukes of Hazzard.
Jennings cheated death, in 1959, when he gave up his seat on the ill-fated plane, carrying Buddy Holly and Richie Valens, which crashed, killing everyone on board.
After many years of hard living, he died in 2002 at the age of 64, from complications of diabetes.
Country has had a number of successful incarnations over the years, all very legitimate, but there is something about classis country of the 60s and 70s that draws me back to my roots.
