CORNWALL, Ontario – Between knocking the dust off a 25-year-old record and leaving her competition in it – Madison Grant’s powerhouse performance at this year’s CDSBEO track and field meet left its mark.

Grant, a St. Anne’s Catholic School student in Cornwall, finished the Grade 7 100-metre in 12.95 seconds at the annual competition for Grade 7 and 8 students, hosted at St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School, on June 5.

Lisa Vandermeer, a teacher at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Ingleside, previously held the record with a time of 13.86. She won the race in ’89, representing Bishop Macdonell.

Vandermeer recently presented Grant with a trophy at a special presentation. She was more than glad to hand over her claim to elementary athletic fame.

“It was about time,” said Vandermeer, whose maiden name was Prieur. “I’m quite pleased to hand over the record to Madison, she’s obviously a great athlete.”

Other records that were broken by St. Anne’s students were: Boys 100-metre in 12.31 seconds by Braeden Levac, previously held by Loi Nguyen from 1995.

The Grade 7 Girls Relay with a time of 1:00:05 run by Carina Vincelli, Madison Grant, Kyra Butlin, and Katie Aitken, shattering the old mark from 1991, held by St. Columban’s.
