CORNWALL, Ontario – Fans packed the Cornwall Curling Centre for world-class action – and that’s exactly what Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue and his crew served up, defeating Team Howard 5-4 at the Shorty Jenkins Classic.

After scoring two in the eighth, Skip Glenn Howard pushed the game into a ninth and deciding end. But Gushue scored the winning shot of the game, defeating Howard, the two-time defending champion, on Sunday.

The four-day World Curling Tour event took place at the Cornwall Curling Centre between September 17-20.

I thought both teams played well – a lot of really good shots made. Fortunately we had the hammer in the extra end and hit a draw to the button for the win,” said Gushue, previously won the Shorty Jenkins Classic in 2009.

Kim Eun Jung, of Uisong, Korea, edged their competitors as well, defeating Allison Flaxey’s rink out of Caledon, Ont., in the women’s final 5-4.

Other curling elite in attendance were Sherry Middaugh (silver Canadian Olympic trials) and Olympic gold medalist (2014) Brad Jacobs.
