CORNWALL, Ontario – Cookies and construction go hand in hand in South Glengarry after Lancaster’s Tim Hortons raised $1,885 towards the township’s first home build.

Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley partnered with the restaurant on this year’s week-long Smile Cookie campaign, raising $1,885.

“Each morning we had a crew of staff and volunteers arrive to decorate the cookies,” said Leigh Taggart, executive director of the local non-profit. “We all had a great time working behind the scenes with the Tim Hortons (#2922) team.”

Since 1998, Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley has built 11 local homes, but has yet to build one in Glengarry.

Taggart says plans are in place for the township’s ‘2016 Build.’

“It’s a very exciting time as our Family Selection Committee is in the final stages of identifying who our next Partner Family will be,” she said. “The timing of the Smile Cookie Campaign is perfect as it’s the first local fundraising that will help build the Glengarry Home.”

According to a Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley statement, homes are not given away:

“Once complete, the home is appraised by a third party and then sold to Partner Families at fair market value. The main reason Habitat homes are affordable is they are offered without a financial down-payment – families must provide a minimum of 500 sweat equity hours (volunteer hours to a Habitat-related project) and the mortgage is offered interest-free so each monthly payment made by the family goes directly to property taxes and principal payment.”
