HEART TRANSPLANT: Mike Scott’s surgery is done, now the wait begins

CORNWALL, Ontario – Mike Scott thought it might take two years to find a new heart…turns out it was more like two weeks.

Now a new wait begins.

Scott had his transplant completed Wednesday morning. His wife Tia tells Seaway News doctors are keeping him unconscious for the next day or so to see how things will unfold.

He will be unconscious for two to four days. So far so good,” she said. “The surgeon is monitoring his other organs as well as the heart. They also have to monitor for internal bleeding which is quite common because of the blood thinners.”

Scott, just 35, was put on the transplant list weeks ago when he suffered a massively debilitating heart attack. He received word from doctors in Ottawa Tuesday that the transplant would take Wednesday.

“Scared…very nervous,” is how he responded when asked about his feelings. “It’s your main organ, so you know…”

Scott had been in Ottawa just a few days ago to undergo further testing.

“They told me I was at the top of the list, but they said it could still be as long as two years because I was competing against every other patient in Ontario.”

The surgery began at 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Tia said doctors will keep an eye for complications.

He may need dialysis but it’s too soon to tell,” she said. “If he has to be opened back up, it’s better that he remains unconscious for now.

Well wishes for Scott have already begun flooding social media. You can post your thoughts here.

Scott’s old heart was almost completely finished. A ventricle assist device was keeping him alive by helping to regulate the functions of his compromised heart that was almost completely blocked.

He spent days in a medically-induced coma in an Ottawa hospital bed after suffering a massive heart attack in January.
