CORNWALL, Ontario – Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Cornwall and the United Counties region.

The area can expect between 15 to 30 milimetres of rain to begin falling Monday night and into Tueday evening.

“Rain from this low will move into areas extending from Lake Huron to the Golden Horseshoe this evening, then spread northeast to remaining regions including the National Capital by midnight,” the statement reads.

The forecasted rainfall has lead both the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) and the South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) to issued flood warnings.

“Long range forecasts are showing an accumulated precipitation total of 70mm or more over the next 5 days” reads the RRCA warning. “Upper portions of the watershed still have significant snowpack. Combined runoff from the rainfall and snowmelt may cause ponding and potential for flooding in low lying areas.”

The SNC states that while severe flooding is not expected at this time, rapidly rising water levels in low-lying areas can pose a danger.

“Residents are advised to stay away from rivers as the forecasted weather may rapidly increase river flows and banks might be unstable and slippery,” reads teh SNC statement. “Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.”
