CORNWALL, Ontario – The fifth CogecoTV telethon for Hospice Cornwall was a resounding success, raising over $20, 000 more than the set goal of $145, 000.
The final tally of the telethon was $167, 000 with once all the money was counted as some was still coming in after the telethon went off the air.
“The telethon always gas one lady from Nova Scotia who calls in after hours. She gave $500 and then another one called right after her with another $500,” said Cornwall Hospice’s Fundraising Co-ordinator Sandy Collette.
In the first year of the telethon in 2009, Hospice Cornwall raised $45, 200, since that start the fundraiser has grown and as of 2015 Hospice Cornwall has received nearly $732, 000 from the event.
Since its creation, Hospice Cornwall has provided care to 100, 000 residents, free of charge to those with an OHIP card.
Some of the guests lined up for this year’s telethon included Lionel Lauzon, who organized the Knights of Columbus Charity Golf Tournament for Hospice Cornwall. Other guests include Hospice Cornwall Board Chair Ruth Pollack, and charity organizers and other supporters of Hospice Cornwall.
One such supporter was Johanna Murray, one of the organizers of Cornwall Waterfest. She said that this year, proceeds from Waterfest will be going to support Hospice Cornwall.
Collette said that one major difference that she noticed this year was that donations to the telethon were bigger than previous years and she wanted to thank all of Hospice Cornwall’s supporters for their generosity.
