CORNWALL, Ontario – The electoral district association for the Conservative Party of Canada held its annual breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, December 2, in Cornwall. There were over 300 members and supporters in attendance, who all had the opportunity to meet with the recently elected leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Andrew Scheer.
Attendees were greeted by both Scheer and the MP for Stormont–Dundas–South Glengarry Guy Lauzon, before sitting down for a hot breakfast.
“We don’t always win when we’re united, but we always lose when we’re divided,” Scheer reminded the membership during his speech. Introduced by the local MP, both politicians remarked on the fact that they were elected to the House of Commons together in 2004, and look forward to future elections.
This year’s event was in stark contrast to last year, which took place during the race to replace former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and included several leadership hopefuls such as Lisa Raitt, Michael Chong, and Kellie Leitch. Well known celebrity candidate Kevin O’Leary, who had not yet entered the contest, would later be backed by Lauzon, who helped form his exploratory committee.
Scheer became leader of the party on May 27 of this year, after edging out frontrunner Maxime Bernier following 13 rounds of voting.
Today’s event proved successful for the federal riding association with one of the biggest turnouts for the annual fundraiser, forcing the EDA to have to refuse people.
“It’s the largest breakfast we’ve ever had, we usually have around 250 to 300 people…we’re at 340 and we had to refuse lots cause there’s just no room,” said Lauzon.
“There’s no question that you’re looking at the future Prime Minister of Canada in 2019,” remarked Lauzon, on the party’s future hopes against current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
