CORNWALL, Ontario – Tommy Sauve, the City of Cornwall’s Safety, Training and Operations Supervisor posted on Facebook at around 3:10 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4 that the City was investigating a potential gas leak on Fifth St.
UPDATE: 7:37pm: One lane of Fifth St. is now open. Crews continue to work on repairs.
UPDATE: Sauve has told Seaway News that the City of Cornwall, Cornwall Fire Services and Union Gas all confirmed that there was a gas leak in the sewer under Fifth St. Four homes were evacuated by Cornwall Fire Services. The leak was in the Union Gas line off of one of the homes. Union Gas has to dig up a part of the boulevard to fix the problem and possibly part of one driveway. Sauve said that the evacuation was just a precaution and did not expect the work to repair the leak to take long. He estimated the work should be finished in about two hours, as of 4:32 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4.
Fifth St. was closed between Sydney St. and Pitt St.
“We are working with Union Gas and the Cornwall Fire Department to investigate a potential gas leak,” Sauve said in his post on the City of Cornwall, Ontario Facebook page.
