CORNWALL, Ontario – Marijuana became legal in Canada today, Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018.

The Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) has provided some guidelines in their online store for purchasing and consuming cannabis, especially for those who have not consumed before.

Those who have never consumed cannabis are suggested to start by trying products with a lower Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content. The higher the THC content, the more intoxicating the effects of the marijuana.

Also important is the Cannabidiol (CBD) content of marijuana. CBD, unlike THC, is less psychoactive than THC and has a greater effect on the body, including in reducing pain from arthritis and inflammation.

The OCS also warns that there are significant differences in how cannabis is consumed and it’s affects on the user.

Those who smoke or vape cannabis will likely feel it’s effects in five to 15 minutes and those effects will last for about two to four hours. However, those who ingest cannabis might not feel any effects for 30 minutes or even up to 3 hours and those effects will last considerably longer, up to eight hours. This is why it is important for users to start with a low dose and see how that dose affects them.

The OCS sells marijuana plant buds, oils and pre-wrapped joints on their online store and they list the THC and CBD content of all of their products.

Never drive while on cannabis.

Cannabis smoke is still harmful to the health of the user and those around them.

Avoid cannabis if you have mental health issues or if your family has a history of mental health issues.

Do not consume cannabis and drive.

Do not consume cannabis while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not mix cannabis with alcohol.

Do not mix cannabis with tobacco as this can increase health risks and the risk of dependency.

Avoid cannabis if you are under the age of 25.

Most importantly, do your own research. Ask your doctor or follow the helpful resources provided by OCS.
