CORNWALL, Ontario – thinc design held a charette about the Cornwall waterfront at the Cornwall Civic Complex on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018. The goal of the charette was to present ideas for the waterfront that had been gathered by thinc design over the summer.
thinc has been contracted by the City of Cornwall to update the City’s Waterfront Plan, which last saw an update in 2007.
Mike Tocher of thinc said that frequent concerns that they had heard from Cornwall residents about the waterfront surrounded issues related to development.
“I know there is a real concern we will propose condos across the waterfront and that is not the case,” he said. “No one wants Cornwall to stay stagnant,” he added. “Development is good, but we have to figure out where that could happen.”
Tocher said that keeping public spaces accessible was an important priority, but did not rule out moving some things around, he used the ball diamonds at Legion Park as an example.
“We have heard loud and clear that people love the ball diamonds,” he said. “But could they be moved? Maybe. They aren’t great ball diamonds as it is and maybe they can be moved or improved, but that doesn’t mean they would be replaced by condos.”
thinc divided the waterfront into five areas of focus: Guindon Park, Canal Lands, Lamoureux Park, Harbor to College and East Front.
Tocher said that the purpose of this charette was to collect more data about what people wanted to see along the waterfront in Cornwall, then present a formal proposal in January.
