CORNWALL, Ontario – The five Canadian Union of Public Employee councils (CUPE) that represent approximately 600 City of Cornwall employees will be protesting outside Cornwall City Hall on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018.
The protest will start at 6 p.m. and will likely continue into the beginning of Monday night’s council meeting. CUPE had begun protests of this kind in September, but this is the first such protest of 2018.
The 600 CUPE employees have been working without a contract since 2015.
In 2017 it was reported in local media that City Council had passed a zero percent increase to their wages in a closed meeting.
“We feel the City wants us to roll over with the old contracts which is no real negotiation,” said Alison Denis, a National CUPE Representative at the first protest in September.
The CUPE councils expected to be present at the Monday night protest are Council 3251, which represents inside workers, 234, which represents outside workers, 1792, for Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge employees, 3251-51 for library workers, and 5734 which represents paramedics.
