CORNWALL, Ontairo – The Cornwall Chamber of Commerce held their 30th annual Business Excellence Awards Dinner on Saturday,Feb 24 at the Nav Centre in Cornwall.

This year’s Citizen of the Year Award winner was Rachelle Lamond, was born and raised in Cornwall. She was a longtime teacher, and has 24 years of volunteer service.

Lamond taught in local French schools for 37 years, including École élémentaire catholique Marie-Tanguay.

She has spent 18 of those years volunteering with the Children’s Treatment Centre as a board member, a volunteer receptionist, member of the auction committee, services committee, finance committee, and as a volunteer with the celebrity walk and bike-a-thon.

She has also been a volunteer with the Cornwall branch of Bereaved Families of Ontario for 15 years, serving as a board member since 2010.

When asked how she felt about winning the award, Lamond said “it is so overwhelming for such a big crowd to accept your work. It is a great honour to win Citizen of the Year.”

She also had advice to those thinking about volunteering in the community.

“Don’t be shy, don’t be afraid to get involved, your community needs you,” she said.
