CORNWALL, Ontario – This St. Patty’s day brought local gardeners and farmers to the Benson Centre to bring more green into the world with Seedy Saturday, on Saturday, March 17, 2018.
Seedy Saturday makes it possible for those who are new to gardening and those with more experience learn and purchase hard to obtain seeds.
The event was able to come together with the help of the key organizers like Kat Rendek and Bill Carriere and support from the Trillium Foundation.
Over 1200 people came out for the fourth year in a row to browse through seeds and learn more about gardening.
“All the vendors are producing organic, non-GMO seeds right here in the Cornwall and Ottawa areas and they are getting them out to the community,” said Kat Rendek.
This year Seedy Saturday took over both levels of the Benson Centre where last year the event was half the size.
Over 35 people volunteered to help with the event and close to 40 vendors.
“People are having lots of fun and the kids are great!” explained Sophie Lepage who volunteered at the event for the first time this year.
Some stations included new technologies, fresh foods, and crafts for children.
“The turnout today has been crazy! Just awesome,” said Bill Carriere.
This year’s attendance was significantly higher than previous years and is expected to be higher again next year.
The event was hosted by the Community Garden Network and was responsible for bringing the event together.
With the attendance doubling every year, it seems St. Patricks will be even greener then the last one.
