Police investigate fire hydrant tampering

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) confirmed to Cornwall Seaway News that they were investigating a case of tampering of two municipal fire hydrants and a pumping station.

“I can confirm that there were two mischief’s to City fire hydrants between May 31-June 1, 2018 where 2 hydrants were tampered with,” CCPS Communications Officer Stephanie MacRae wrote in an email to Seaway News. “The first was on Vincent Massey Drive before approximately 11 pm on May 31, 2018 and the second was in the area of Power Dam Drive in the morning hours on June 1, 2018. I can confirm there was a third incident on Harbour Road, believed to have taken place in the morning hours on June 1, 2018, where the pumping station controls at the Harbour Road location had been tampered with, resulting in water backing up.”

She said that she could not disclose how the fire hydrants were tampered with because the investigation is ongoing.

“The investigation is still ongoing and we are not yet able to determine if the three incidents are connected,” MacRae wrote. “No suspects have been identified at this time and police are asking for anyone with information to please contact CCPS at 613-932-2110or 613-933-5000 ext. 2404 to leave anonymous information.”

MacRae stated that there had been no further reports of tampering incidents and that they did not believe there was a concern for public safety at this time.
