CORNWALL, Ontario – Tommy Sauve, The City of Cornwall’s Safety, Training and Operations Supervisor posted on Facebook earlier today that one of the Crossing Guards in Cornwall was struck by a vehicle early on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019.
“Early this morning one of our crossing guards was struck by a vehicle as he was performing his duties, thankfully he was not seriously injured (minor bump and bruise),” wrote Sauve. “My message to everyone is simple, slow down and pay attention in every school zone for everyone’s safety, there is no need for anyone to drive aggressive because they are in a hurry, running late or simply not paying attention. Crossing Guards perform a vital service in our community, most importantly, protecting our children with a safe passage when crossing the street.”
The incident took place at the Water St. and Gloucester St. crossing. According to the Cornwall Community Police Service, the incident took place at around 8:20 a.m. and the driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act.
Those who do not obey a Crossing Guard’s signals can be fined $180. Sauve states that the driver involved in this morning’s incident was charged by police.
