Long Sault will get a roundabout, despite deputy mayor’s objections

CORNWALL, Ontario – South Stormont Deputy Mayor Tammy Hart was the lone dissenting vote in an 11-1 county council vote to approve as many as two roundabouts for the township.

County councillors voted Monday morning to approve construction of one roundabout at the corner of Moulinette Road and County Road 2 in Long Sault. A second roundabout could be built in the distant future at the corner of county roads 36 and 2.

“Of course I’m disappointed,” said Hart, who suggested the majority of South Stormont residents are opposed to the roundabouts. “I certainly believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

“The seniors will find them very confusing.”

But the vast majority of her county council colleagues disagreed. Proponents of roundabouts say they ease traffic congestion and become an integral part of a neighbourhood traffic system once up and running.

Many Ontario communities, including nearby Kemptville, employ roundabouts.

The first roundabout is likely to be built next year, following a 30-day public review period.

Lanes will be reduced to two from four for the $1.1-million project.
