AKWESASNE – The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) announced on Monday, June 14 that Kana:takon District Chief Darryl “Kermit” Lazore had passed away.

“Chief Lazore wore his heart on his sleeve and his love and respect for the people of Akwesasne was widely known and felt.  He was nearing the end of his second elected term in office, having served the community for six years with a passion for issues in housing and public safety,” the statement from the MCA reads. “In the office, Chief Lazore was known for his humor, kindness and friendliness; Council and staff will surely miss him. We thank those who have offered their condolences and we ask that thoughts continue to be with his family and children.”

The MCA did not state Chief Lazore’s age, date of death, or how his vacant Council seat will be filled. Seaway News reached out to the MCA for comment on these questions, but have yet to receive a response as of time of publication.
