AKWESASNE – The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) released a statement on Wednesday, Feb. 6 reminding residents that cannabis-related businesses must obtain a license from the MCA prior to selling cannabis related products.
The reminder was released one day after Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) raided two businesses, AK420 Dispensary on White Rd and Wild Flower Cannabis Dispensary on Island Rd. Police seized products including cannabis buds, cannabis accessories, a substance referred to as shatter and cash.
The Akwesasne Interim Cannabis Regulation (MCR 2018 #212) took effect on Oct. 17, 2018 when cannabis was legalized in Canada. The regulation designates that possession, use, cultivation, sale and distribution of cannabis in Akwesasne is under the jurisdiction of the MCA. The interim regulation strives to prioritize health and safety within the community. Violations may result in prosecution under applicable legislation.
“The Mohawk Council is working diligently to ensure that an orderly transition from cannabis prohibition to a regulated cannabis market in Akwesasne will occur under Akwesasne Regulations,” read the MCA statement.
Currently, the MCA has not issued any licenses under the interim regulation. The MCA is working to ensure licensed distributors have access to designated safe, credibly supplied cannabis.
“The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne will continue to work diligently to ensure that an orderly transition occurs in the coming months and that a fulsome law enactment process takes place for the development of an Akwesasne Cannabis Law,” read the MCA statement.
