MALLORYTOWN, Ontario – A major accident on Tuesday, March 14 on Highway 401 west of Mallorytown has left one person dead, dozens injured and has closed the highway for more than 20 hours.
The collision occurred at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon and involved nearly 30 vehicles. One of the drivers from one of the tractor trailers involved in the collision died of injuries he sustained.
The man who died was identified Wednesday afternoon by Ontario Provincial Police as 45-year-old Ian Melville of Hamilton, Ontario.
One of the trailers was carrying fluorosilicic acid, an irritant that can cause respiratory
irritation, as well as irritation to eyes, nose that throat.
More than 30 individuals involved in the accident were sent to the Kingston General Hospital. The Hospital went into Code Orange Tuesday afternoon to deal with the incoming chemical spill patients.
As of Wednesday morning, the accident and spill were both contained, but Highway 401 Eastbound and Westbound will remain closed all day as crews deal with the fatal collision and cleanup the spill.
