CORNWALL, Ontario – Part of the St. Lawrence River in Cornwall will remain closed until next week as salvage crews get ready to lift another tugboat from the swirling water.

McKeil Marine said in a statement to closure of the river section has been extended until Aug. 10, under the authority of Transport Canada’s Navigation Protection Program.

“The area of the St. Lawrence River that is closed is around the salvage site, 675 meters (2,214 feet) upstream of the Three Nations Bridge to 600 meters (1,968 feet) downstream,” McKeil said in a press release. “The reason for the extension is the ongoing recovery of the work tug LCM 131, which requires the current reduction currently being facilitated by Ontario Hydro.”

Salvagers expect to have the tug, the LCM 131, removed from the water by the end of the week.

“This section of the river is not safe for boaters until the barge OC 181 is completely removed from the river, due to the cables extending from the barge to the decommissioned Seaway International Bridge.”
