CORNWALL, Ontario – A petition has been submitted to Cornwall City Council against recent changes made to some Cornwall Transit bus routes.

In late November, Cornwall Transit announced that it was removing stops from Sunrise Route #2, Cumberland Route #2, McConnell Route #1 and Riverdale Route #4.

The routes lost between six and two stops with residents directed to go to other nearby stops.

“You wanted buses to be on time. Cornwall Transit listened,” reads the City of Cornwall press release.

“These route revisions will help keep buses on time and alleviate passenger concerns regarding late buses during peak hours,” said Len Tapp, Transit Division Manager.

Now, at least some residents feel that there was not enough consideration and consultationd done before the changes took effect on Dec. 10.

“It is unfortunate that the people concerned with the bus changes were not consulted,” wrote Maureen Dunn, the apparent author of the petition. “People who ride the bus are already walking one or more blocks to get to the bus stop. Come Dec. 10 these people will be walking four or five blocks.”

Dunn also has a concern over safety.

“At 11th St. (sic) there is no sidewalk from McConnell to the bus stop,” she writes. “If you surivive crossing McConnell with the cars and trucks turning left and the others coming off McConnell, then you have nowhere to walk but on the street. Cars the trucks and people do not make a good mix. Powers that be get out of your cars and ride the bus it might give you empathy for other people.”

Council is expected to recieve this petition and refer it to administration for a later report.
