CORNWALL, Ontario – Representatives from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and New York Power Authority (NYPA) met at the monument at the centre of the Saunders-Moses Power Dam to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the completion of the project.
NYPA President and CEO Gil Quiniones spoke of the symbolism of the dam.
“This dam symbolizes a power greater than electrical generation and that’s cooperation between two great nations,” he said.
OPG Board Chair Bernard Lord took the time to point out the strategic importance and history of the dam.
“During the 2003 black out, the Moses-Saunders Dam was one of the few sites that stayed in operation,” he said. “Robert H. Saunders fought tirelessly to ensure Ontario had the power it needed after World War II.”
Representatives throughout the ceremony spoke of the cooperation between two men, R.H. Saunders of Canada and Robert Moses of New York, that made the St. Lawrence Power Project a reality.
“Today we are celebrating the power of partnership,” said OPG President and CEO Jeff Lyash. “The power that was launched with a simple handshake. We share the water of the St. Lawrence and the clean and reliable power it yields.”
Joseph Kessler of the NYPA and Mike Martelli of OPG signed a new Joint Works Agreement to close out the ceremony.
