Raise more than the dead this Halloween weekend

CORNWALL, Ontario – Calling all ghouls, goblins, and other tortured souls: the Centre for the Arts Collective is hosting its first costume party at the Cornwall Golf & Country Club tonight.

Proceeds from the Halloween fundraising event will go towards the establishment of a public arts centre in Cornwall, Ont.

The costume party will feature competitions and prizes, light munchies (courtesy of special sponsor St. Albert’s Cheese), fun decorations, evening lunch, and a laser light show and music by DJ Shellshock.

In addition to the spooky entertainment, Centre for the Arts Collective lifetime achievement awards will be presented to Edith Stiles, Lionel Tessier, and Tom Thompson.

Tickets are $25.00 in advance (at The Grind in downtown Cornwall and Your Arts Council (Cornwall and The Counties), and $30 at the door, which opens at 8:00 p.m. on Friday.

Building a home for the arts

Cornwall City Council approved a proposal (RFP) for a firm to begin a $50,000 art centre feasibility study at its September 14th meeting, which is scheduled to be released by February 2016.

Once this is done, we will be very close to shovel-ready and focusing on applying for the appropriate federal and provincial grants,” said Carilyne Hebert, Centre for the Arts Collective member and first-term city councillor. It’s important to note that provincial and federal funders will only look at you if you have a study in place for a big project like this. With the plan, we will know what the centre will consist of, what it should look like, and where it should be. This will kick us into high gear. And as you can see, we are still very much active working hard to bring awareness of this important project and raising funds.”

According to a Centre for the Arts Collective, proceeds from the costume party will be deposited into a dedicated account held by the City of Cornwall. In addition, supporters who make a personal donation through the collective or directly to the city will receive a charitable tax receipt.

This is the third event (Heart for Art and High Five for the Arts mural project) in support of the annual Centre for the Arts Collective.

Organizers say eight local companies have already made generous donations for prize giveaways.
