SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – The ninth annual Paddle Poker Run in support of the Alzheimer’s Society casted off on Saturday, July 21 from Hybrid Marine just outside of Lancaster.

Josée Roy-Pilon, Campaign Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Society of Cornwall and District said that she hoped to see as many as 80 people take to the water and participate in the Poker Run this year, which would be their most number of participants ever.

In total, she said she hoped to raise around $6,000 for the local Alzheimer’s Society.

“The Alzheimer’s Society will keep the funds local,” she said explaining that they would be used to fund programs like their day program, minds in motion, support groups and an eight-week course for those who suffer from Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

Participants left from Hybrid Marine at 10:30 a.m., their course would take them to three different locations where they would collect poker chips, with a break at Squaw Island.

The paddlers then returned to Hybrid Marine for poker games, free massages and door prizes.

The event was supported by 15 volunteers total.

“Three out of four Canadians know someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia,” said Roy-Pilon. “We need to support individuals and families who suffer from this terrible disease.”
