WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario – Longtime volunteer firefighter and former Township of South Glengarry employee John Hugh Munro passed away last week after a tractor accident at his home. He was 61.

John Hugh was a volunteer with the South Glengarry Fire Service for 34 years at their Williamstown station. He was also a longtime employee at the old Kraft factory in Williamstown before becoming an employee with the Township of South Glengarry’s Roads Department, where he worked for 10 years.

“Our Department is brokenhearted,” stated Fire Chief Dave Robertson, “John Hugh was not only a dedicated member of our Fire Service, but also an avid community volunteer and dear friend to many. He will be missed by the Department and community.”

In respect for John Hugh, Township flags were lowered to half-mast.

“On behalf of Council and all Township employees, I extend our deepest condolences to John Hugh’s family,” stated Mayor Ian McLeod, “We have lost a valued friend and colleague. Our community is a better place because of his many contributions and he will be sorely missed.”

John Hugh Munro leaves behind his wife Jill (née Benton), three children, Brock, Dylan and Shelby and many other family and friends.

Visitation was held over the weekend with a service at St. Mary’s church in Williamstown on Monday.
