CORNWALL, Ontario – The intersection at Second Street West and Brookdale Avenue will finally reopen to traffic later today.
The demolition of the high-level Seaway International Bridge has seen the intersection partially closed for more than two weeks while massive steel spans and concrete pillars were removed and/or demolished.
Andre Girard, vice-president of communications with the Federal Bridge Corporation, confirmed in an interview “the rubble” at the intersection caused by the demo work will be removed Tuesday and the intersection will be fully opened.
Girard, in a post on Federal Bridge Corporation website, indicated work on the removal of the bridge is progressing well.
The massive spans that have already been removed from the bridge can weight as much as 140 tonnes.
The steel spans are set on the ground and chopped up my heavy machinery before being trucked away.
The concrete pillars are destroyed with a massive jackhammer-like apparatus that reduces them to a pile of debris that is also removed.
A barge with a crane on board has arrived to the Cornwall Harbour for the superstructure demolition over the St. Lawrence River. This demolition is expected to last until mid-September.
Additional superstructure spans will come down next fall, and pier demolition will follow throughout the year with the largest piers coming down through the winter of 2016.
