CORNWALL, Ontario – The 68th edition of the Glengarry Highland Games was held over the weekend.
“I think we had a very successful Highland Games weekend, the weather (cooperated) we didn’t have to cancel any events,” said Gord White, president of the Games. “The tattoo, Friday night, was excellent and the Saturday numbers were quite high.
Again the massed band was a spectacular event, this year, with 52 bands.
Honoured guest, General Marquis Hainse, opened up the tattoo and performed the official opening ceremony, on Saturday, as well.
There were a record numbers of militia units, 10, in fact, participating in The Highlander Challenge tug of war, a very popular event. The Cameron Highlanders, from Ottawa, took the top prize.
“It was very successful,” said White. “The general presented the trophy to the winning team.”
On Saturday, Justin Trudeau made an appearance at the Games, sporting his maternal grandparents’ Sinclair tartan. White said that the Liberal leader seemed to have a good crowd around him, wherever he went.
“He was quite happy to be at the games.”
The theme, this year, was respect and remembrance of our armed forces, in particular, the two soldiers that died, last October, to those acts of domestic terrorism, explained White.
“Overall things went well; we had good weather, good crowds, and no glitches. I’m very happy with our result.”
