CORNWALL, Ontario – According to the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA), hummus producer the Sabra Dipping Company has recalled some of their humus products. Their products are sold in stores throughout Canada and the U.S.

The fear is that these types of hummus have been exposed to the Listeria bacteria which is undetectable by smell or taste, but can still cause serious illness and in some cases, death.

The bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes, was identified in Sabra’s manufacturing facility but the products were not tested.

Listeria is dangerous for the young, elderly and pregnant women. Symptoms of a Listeria infection include: high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

The products that are suspected of contamination were packaged before Nov. 8 and have expiration dates up to Jan. 23, 2017.

The flavours of hummus named in the recall include, but are not limited to the popular flavours of: Classic, Garlic, Supremely Spicy, Red Pepper and Pine Nut.

The FDA recommends that anyone who suspects that their hummus is contaminated with Listeria to discard it immediately.
