CORNWALL, Ontario – The Tri-County Literacy Council has recently completed a new curriculum to teach seniors how to use electronic tablets.

The program is a part of the federal government’s New Horizon’s for Seniors program.

“Tablet Training for Seniors is a unique project to ensure the social participation and inclusion of seniors by making technology easier for them,” said the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. “Through New Horizons for Seniors Program projects such as this, seniors are encouraged to pursue active lifestyles, expand their technology knowledge, maintain social ties and share their knowledge, skills and experience with others.”

Tri-County Literacy has completed a pilot test class of 12 seniors aged 62 to 88 to help evaluate the curriculum. The course content addresses the different needs and learning styles of seniors. Seniors wrote the curriculum of the program, and after receiving feedback from the senior participants in the program, the content has been edited to ensure that it is ready for general use.

The curriculum will be shared with seniors and literacy groups throughout the province.

“Seniors are often under-represented in literacy programs as standard course content does not always align with their specific learning needs and goals,” a statement from the Tri-County Literacy Council reads. “Tablet Training for Seniors addresses this issue. “
