Tax scams making the rounds in Cornwall: cops

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall police are warning the public after a pair of tax department scams have begun making the rounds in the city.

Police said Friday e-mails have been received that suggest residents are being asked to fil out a form with their social insurance number and birthday, while suggesting a tax credit is available.

“If you receive an e-mail indicating you are eligible for such a credit, confirm you are on a secure legitimate site or seek advice before replying,” police said in a statement. “Remember fraudsters go through a lot of work to make their scams look real. Always be aware of identity theft and take precautions not to be a victim.”

Likewise another scam involving a threat of penalty is being circulated as well, with residents being told they are delinquent in their tax payments.

The threat suggests if the taxes are not paid police will make an arrest.

“The (Canada Revenue Agency) does not threaten to have you arrested and do not request for payment through a money transfer service like Western Union or Moneygram,” said police. “The CRA would contact you by way of mail or registered mail and not by way of e-mail.”

If you wish to report fraud you can contact 1-800-959-8281.
