CORNWALL, Ontario – Environment Canada has ended a tornado warning for eastern Ontario, while the hot and humid conditions keep the region sweltering and under a severe thunderstorm watch.
The weather agency issued the watch at 5:24 p.m. on Sunday, which is currently in place for Cornwall, Maxville, Lancaster, Alexandria, Winchester, Newington, Morrisburg, and Long Sault.
According to the weather agency, “conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.”
The department’s meteorologists predict an advancing cold front will generate afternoon thunderstorms over portions of eastern and central Ontario. Due to the rising heat and humidity, some of these thunderstorms have the potential to become severe.
On Sunday morning, Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) posted a high heat and humidity alert to its website and Facebook page.
The health unit warned residents across SDG & Prescott-Russell to take special care to prevent heat-related illness (for health unit tips and information click here and here).
