CORNWALL, Ontario – Canada’s national pastime hits the pavement for the United Way of SDG at Boston Pizza Cornwall this Saturday.
The local charitable organization has teamed up with the popular eatery (located at 1234 Brookdale Avenue) to serve up a fresh event with Cornwall Colts for referees and fun giveaways.
“The winning team gets treated to a pizza party,” said UW program and event coordinator Sherry Davis.
The 5-on-5 ball hockey tournament runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Boston Pizza Cornwall parking lot on October 17. It costs $100 per team. The rules are simple, two women must be in play at all times, and participants must be 18 years and older. Each team will play three 30-minute games.
To ensure everyone has an opportunity to score big for Cornwall area charities, individual registrants are invited to join in for a $20 donation. The generous athletes will be paired with various teams.
Cornwall Community Police Service Special Const. Melanie Chartrand signed up to help the community, earn bragging rights, and the piles of pizza up for grabs.
“We challenge EMS (to register a team) for sure,” said Chartrand.
United Way of SDG executive director Lori Greer told Seaway News the 2015-2016 campaign has raised 15 per cent (roughly $106,500) of the $710,000 goal.
The City of Cornwall and the United Counties declared October ‘United Way Month’ at separate flag raisings on Thursday (October 1). Greer says both municipalities donate annually to the campaign through payroll deduction options offered through their workplaces.
UW supports 17 member agencies offering 18 programs throughout Cornwall and the United Counties.
