United Way of SD&G receives early Christmas gift

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Holiday Wine & Gourmet Tastings event raised $48,296 on Saturday, pushing the United Way of SD&G’s annual community campaign to almost 35% of its target goal.

Over 500 guests attended the swanky affair, which was sponsored by Stradwicks Flooring & More, along with Scotiabank as corporate matching sponsor, at the Nav Centre in Cornwall.

“We want to express a heartfelt thank you to the community partners, sponsors, and guests who made this evening a tremendous success,” said Angie Baker, event chair.

In 2014, the event raised $39,000.

Nav Centre’s Luc McCabe (a main judge at Upper Canada Village’s annual Food Lovers’ Field Days – Iron Pan competition and season two contestant of Chopped Canada) catered the event.

The annual Holiday Wine & Gourmet Tastings also sported a new look compared to its two previous editions, and featured live jazz music, fine cuisine, gourmet dessert stations, martini bar, live and silent auction.

“The real key to the success of the evening is we had over 100 sponsors,” said Baker. “Seaway News was our primary media partner. Without TC Media – Cornwall, we would not have gotten the word out the way we did.”

The United Way of SD&G 2015 aims to raise $710,000 by Dec. 18, to support the 17 non-profit agencies (offering 18 programs) under its umbrella.

“The goal is to assist friends, family and neighbours in our community – and we are able to help with that by working together,” said Pat Clarke, honorary event chair.
