CORNWALL, Ontario – By mid-afternoon on Thursday, the City issued a statement reminding residents to be prepared for the coming rain.
“Homeowners are encouraged to make sure eavestroughs are clean of debris and downspouts are directed away from the home,” the statement read. “Homes that are fitted with a sump pump or backflow prevention device should be checked to ensure they are operational.”
The City went on to explain that they would be monitoring the City’s sewer infrastructure over the coming days.
“The City of Cornwall has undertaken its routine preparedness measures and will be monitoring its critical sewer infrastructure during the expected rain event,” the statement continued. “Residents with specific flooding questions or concerns are asked to contact the Municipal Works Department at (613) 932-5354.”
Environment Canada has placed a rainfall warning over most of Eastern Ontario.
Cornwall could expect to see as much as 70 millimeters of rain.
The rain is expected to start this afternoon and continue through the evening.
“Periods of rain are expected to persist through Friday and potentially Saturday as well,” reads a Rainfall Warning on Environment Canada’s website. “Rainfall amounts for Thursday and Friday could total between 45 and 70 mm, with further amounts possible on Saturday.”
A Rainfall Warning is issued when more than 25 millimeters of rain is forecast to fall in a short period of time.
