CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall is losing one of its grocery stores.
It was announced to staff Monday that Metro, located on Vincent Massey Drive, will be shuttered in eight weeks, said sources.
Mark Bernhardt, spokesperson for the company, confirmed the news and said the move was based on economics.
“The reason for the closure is that the store was not able to meet sales targets in this market,” he said. “The decision was prompted also by the fact that the lease was expiring.”
The decision means nearly 70 people will be out of a job. Some 17 full-time people are employed at the Metro in Cornwall.
“We are not aware of any future uses for the store locations, and that is all the information we have available at this time,” added Bernhardt.
Rumours have run rampant in recent weeks concerning the future of the store.
Two weeks ago Seaway News reached out to Metro concerning a potential closure, but at that time spokespeople indicated they were not prepared to discuss rumours.
The store has undergone a number of different brands over the years, including A&P, Loeb and Super C to name a few.
