CORNWALL, Ontario – A newly-elected city councillor says he has filed a $40,000 lawsuit against a Cornwall website operator for defamation.
But Jamie Gilcig claimed Tuesday afternoon he still hasn’t seen any documentation.
Coun. Brock Frost added he is contemplating legal action against a pair of other individuals as well.
Frost, who attends his first regular council meeting Monday night, circulated a press release Monday confirming the lawsuit against Gilcig.
In a statement Frost is claiming an online posting by Gilcig, who operates a local website, has resulted in a direct loss of income.
Gilcig sent an email to media Tuesday afternoon suggesting: “I still have not been served by Mr. Frost.”
Frost said in an e-mail the lawsuit is related to a posting from October.
The lawsuit will seek nearly $15,000 in lost real estate commission, Frost said, adding he also wants $25,000 in punitive damages. Frost’s statement does not list his legal counsel.
Gilcig has not responded to an email seeking comment, though he has asked Seaway News for a copy of the press release issued by Frost.
None of the allegations against him have been proven.
Gilcig posted an item on the weekend related to a massive lawsuit the city councillor was facing out of the U.S. concerning a real estate deal in Nicaragua.
Frost indicated that lawsuit was dismissed earlier this year, though Seaway News could not independently confirm the status of the action.
Court documents indicate an apeal has been filed in the case.
